ANNIVERSARY AND WEDDING PLATES

Wedding and anniversary plates have been traditional gifts created by potters in eastern Pennsylvania to "document" and celebrate these important family events. There are two kinds of plates we make -- high-fired stoneware on a separate page and traditional redware shown here.

Included are the names of bride and groom and wedding date. For anniversary plates, husband and wife are named with the number of years married and possibly the wedding date. Ordinarily the first names only are placed on a plate unless the last name is requested.

Two basic designs offered are the traditional "Tree of Life" and also one I call "Abundance." Slight design variations may occur as these are hand-painted. There are two texts to choose from -- pictured in the examples.

10" REDWARE PLATE FOR ANNIVERSARY or WEDDING

This 10" plate is created with red clay which becomes traditional redware with a "scraffitto" design.  Scraffitto is the process of painting a layer of slip (a thin mixture of light colored clay) onto the plate and then carving the design through the slip layer to the red clay beneath.  A nontoxic glossy glaze is brushed on and fired to about 1875 degrees. Pictured is the "Tree of Life" design including the last name. Weight: 2 lb.

ORDERING YOUR REDWARE PLATE

Online orders are welcome using the Plate Order Form provided where all the needed information may be recorded. After we receive your order you will be contacted by email or phone to confirm your order and arrange payment. Orders may also be placed by phone or email.  Summer and Fall months please allow 6 weeks from time of order to delivery.

Note: If the order is placed too late to finish the plate by the time it is needed, I will gladly send a gift certificate which can be presented at the celebration or wedding announcing that a special gift is forth-coming.
